Uganda & Rwanda

Uganda and Rwanda are incredibly lush, friendly countries located in the mountainous central highlands. The primeval forest of the Virunga Volcanoes is home to the last mountain gorilla population in the world. These special animals are rare and gentle, and spending an hour with them has been revered as a mystical experience.

A highlight of our trips to Uganda has become a visit to Ngamba Island on Lake Victoria at a Jane Goodall chimpanzee sanctuary. You can spend a few days with the chimps, and have the option of participating in a forest walk with the babies. You are guaranteed to have them climb all over you, kiss you and play with your laces and zippers. People emerge from the forest with twigs in their hair, ear-to-ear grins and life changing interactions with our closest animal relatives. In the Kibale forest, you can also trek to see wild chimpanzees swinging in the canopy above you.

Uganda has so many vegetation zones that it is a Mecca for bird lovers with over 1,000 species recorded to date. Tree-climbing lions, elephant, leopard, waterbuck and wild forest hogs live in the fertile grasslands of Queen Elizabeth National Park. At Murchison Falls, the Nile comes pounding down through a tiny ravine. Explore the park on game drives and boat cruises.

Uganda and Rwanda are toured primarily by driving and you feel the remoteness of these land locked countries through their rustic simplicity. Itineraries to see the gorillas and chimps are also available on more luxurious chartered flying safaris.
