Selous National Park, Tanzania
Beho Beho
This was a family's vacation site until it became the safari property it is today. The cottages are beautiful and luxurious with indoor and outdoor showers. You will want to stay and EAT here all day, the food is that good! We love their great staff and infinity pool overlooking the park!
Some pretty interesting things happened in this Beho region during World War I. Selous National Park is the largest National Park in Africa and the wildlife here is good. Our only reservation to Beho Beho is its distance from the Rufiji River, which is worth a visit while in Selous!

Beho Beho was the first property to be sited in the 55,000 square km Selous National Park - not on the banks, or the flood plains of the mighty Rufiji River, but in the highlands so as to enjoy the cooling breezes from which its name is derived.
Designed for comfort, Beho Beho's 8 stone built and palm thatched cottages are not only refuges from the equatorial sun nor are they just for sleeping. These spacious suites reveal unrivalled vistas of the Africa bush and are designed as private 'homes' with individuality and flair. Each has a verandah, a separate dressing room leading into an en-suite bathroom with twin basins, high flush toilet and an open air shower.
The lodge's main area includes an open sided lounge and dining area, together with the cocktail bar and billiards room. These provide a sophisticated setting for post safari relaxation and the swimming pool and deck, an ideal place to cool off. Meals are a moveable feast at this Tanzania accommodation facility and are not confined to the formal dining area. There are several lookouts where breakfast and lunch are served and of course areas for dining under the stars. Bush breakfasts and picnics are also arranged for longer safaris.
A specialty of the camp are the guided walking safaris, usually starting early in the morning, before the heat of the day. The walks can last from an hour to three hours culminating in breakfast at a prearranged shady spot or at a rendezvous with a vehicle to go back to camp for a relaxing brunch.
Afternoon walks can also be very rewarding, along the Beho Beho River to meet a vehicle well supplied with welcome sundowner drinks, before the darkness comes and it is time to head back to camp. For game drives, Beho Beho has a fleet of specially designed open-sided, but shaded safari vehicles. These are not the pop-up roof type of enclosed safari cruisers found in the popular national parks.
Beho Beho also has a number of boats stationed at Lake Tagalala, about 30 minutes drive away from the camp. These lake excursions, usually done in the morning, offer close encounters with the resident hippo and crocodile, as well as an amazing number of bird species. They culminate in breakfast under a shady tree and a walk to the nearby hot springs for a therapeutic swim in the warm mineral waters. It is not always necessary to leave camp to witness excellent wildlife. The camp appears to be on a crossroads of animal migratory routes and elephant, buffalo, waterbuck, giraffe, wild dog and hyena, to name just a few, wander freely through the camp.
