Chyulu Hills, Kenya

Campi ya Kanzi

Located between Tsavo & Amboseli, the Chyulu Hills offer stunning scenery & good wildlife viewing. We have not visited Campi ya Kanzi yet but have heard wonderful things about it.  — Mango's view

Campi ya Kanzi means "Camp of the Hidden Treasure" in Kiswahili. For guests, it means "safari in style" at a luxury tented safari camp. The camp lies within a 400-square-mile Maasai private land in Southern Kenya, dominated by Mt. Kilimanjaro, just 35 miles away. The Maasai are the landlords, making it one of the last unspoiled areas of Africa. Connecting three national parks Chyulu, Tsavo and Amboseli, the property is home to a vast wildlife and birdlife population.

The Campi accommodates a maximum of 14 guests in six thatched roof tented cottages and in the Hemingway and Simba suites. Each tented cottage enjoys a different view, and accommodates one or two adults. An extra bed can be added for a child. They feature either twin beds or a king-size bed, made at the camp with local logs, with specially made linen imported from Italy. A table, two safari chairs, a colonial trunk, shelves and hangers for your clothes, and daily fresh flowers complete the interior décor. The suites feature king-size bed, a clothes room between the bedroom and the bathroom, with cabinets. Bathrooms have double sinks. All tented cottages feature a full elegant bath with shower, bidet, basin, and flush toilet and electric light; brass plumbing fixtures add an unexpected touch of elegance and comfort with hot and cold running water. Each tented cottage has a dedicated Maasai attendant assigned to it. At night, Maasai askari (night watchman) patrol the camp.

Tembo ("elephant") House is the heart of the camp. It is open to the outdoors, and from its terrace you'll have a spectacular view of Mt. Kilimanjaro. Tembo House has a large lounge where you can enjoy our books about Africa; relax with a refreshing drink after your safari; listen to classical music while watching a zebra drinking at the waterhole. You will also take your meals at Tembo House. Crystal glasses, fine table settings and candlelight dinners will be a highlight of your Campi ya Kanzi experience. Cooks are specially trained in the preparation of fine Italian cuisine, which is featured along with International and local dishes. Wines are from South Africa and also from the Italian vineyards of Antonella (camp host, along with her husband Luca) specially bottled for Campi ya Kanzi.

Activities include game drives in open specially modified Land Rovers and escorted game walks, bird watching, botanical escorted game walks, cultural visits to your tracker house at the Maasai Village, bush breakfast, picnics, bush dinners and sundowners, and excursions to Chyulu National Park, Amboseli National Park, Tsavo National Park
