Garonga Safari Camp

This is a very special place. Garonga is as much of a safari camp as it is a wilderness retreat. The rooms are gorgeous. The scratch cooking is delicious. The guides are impressive. The game viewing is good but not as prolific as the nearby Sabi Sands. Garonga is an exclusive safari camp situated west of the Kruger National Park on 2,500 hectares between Hoedspruit and Phalaborwa in South Africa's Limpopo Province. The reserve forms part of the Makalali Wildlife Conservancy and offers an in-depth experience for bush lovers seeking more than the classic Big Five encounter. While offering big game viewing, Garonga promises a more intimate wildlife experience with walking, tracking and sleep out excursions.

Garonga's rooms, nestled into Ebony trees on the banks of a watercourse, offer beautiful views. The world-class camp offers 14 spacious ensuite rooms, each with its own deck and indoor and outdoor shower. Inspired by the ochre red spires of nature's termite mounds, the camp accommodation has been designed to reflect the textures of the earth. Thick earthen columns, generous cushions on low beds and billowing white fabrics epitomize this oasis in the middle of the South African bush. Camp amenities include an open plan living area, wine cellar, curio shop and swimming pool, as well as a special sala for aromatherapy sessions.

Garonga's holistic philosophy is to offer a safari for the soul, an unhurried and intimate wildlife encounter - a time to reflect and find inspiration in nature. You can either try your hand at every activity offered, or you can do simply nothing at all - lazing in the hammock with a good book while watching the grazing impala.

Activities include game drives, wilderness walks, sleep outs, outdoor bush-baths and aromatherapy and reflexology sessions. We encourage our guests to indulge in activities that will allow them to walk close to the animals, and thereby enhance their wildlife encounter.
