South Luangwa National Park, Zambia
Mfuwe Lodge
Mfuwe Lodge has some great and some less than ideal qualities. The hippo filled lagoon behind the guest rooms has an awesome 'back patio' viewing experience. The lodge is located inside the entrance gates so you do not have to wait at the bridge to enter the park each morning. Mfuwe is built a little bigger than we like in. It loses the intimate feeling that other area lodges offer and sticks out like a sore thumb a bit. — Mango's view
The South Luangwa National Park is bordered to the East by the Luangwa River, which floods annually into a series of oxbow lagoons. Hidden away among the huge ebony and fig trees on the banks of one of these beautiful lagoons sits Mfuwe Lodge. Mfuwe Lodge has 18 ensuite thatched chalets each with its own private decking area from where you can view the rich wildlife. Game activity at the lagoon continues day and night as breeding herds in abundance come out of the bush to the water to quench their thirst. Each chalet is decorated with superb attention to detail. Each sunken bath has its own private view of the lagoon. What better way to relax and forget the pressures of city life than to soak in the sights and sounds of the African bush? The open plan central lodge facility incorporates reception, lounge, dining and bar areas, under a thatch roof supported by palm poles and dominated by two impressive chimneys at opposite ends. This cool and airy central meeting place is the heart of the lodge. It opens onto a broad timber deck that cantilevers dramatically over the main lagoon. From the comfort of the lodge, guests may view some of Africa's majestic wildlife as animals come down to drink.Experts have dubbed South Luangwa as one of the greatest wildlife sanctuaries in the world, and not without reason. The concentration of game around the Luangwa River and its ox bow lagoons is among the most intense in Africa. The park's 9050 sq km is host to a wide variety of wildlife, birds and vegetation. There are 60 different animal species and over 400 different bird species.
