Ruaha National Park, Tanzania

Ruaha River Lodge

We can't wait to visit Ruaha as it is said to be one of the wildest parks in Tanzania! The Fox's are well known and we love the fact that this camp is owner operated.  — Mango's view

Ruaha River Lodge is set in among a large cluster of rocks right on the water's edge on the north bank of the Great Ruaha River. The immediate vicinity of the lodge is one of the better areas for game viewing in Ruaha and particularly during the dry season this area attracts large numbers of animals that are drawn to the river to drink. Your hosts, Peter and Sarah Fox have an in-depth knowledge of the park and its inhabitants having lived in Ruaha all of their lives. Together with their team of guides, they will ensure that you will want your stay in Ruaha to go on forever.

Because the camp has been here so long, the resident game pretty much see the camp as home. Elephant are attracted to the same large riverine trees that make such good shade for the tents, so sitting in your room is often one of the best places to be for close up views of them. At night there's also likely to be a fair amount around, so you need to be careful going to and from your tent that you don't meet one of the local buffalo.

The camp has a laid back relaxed feeling with friendly staff, many of which have been there since the lodge was first opened in the late 80's. River Lodge isn't luxury and doesn't pretend to be, rooms are fairly basic, but far from uncomfortable and the dining areas and bars are located to make the most of the riverside setting.

Accommodations consist of 20 rooms with either twin beds or a double bed. Additional beds can be added. The en-suite bathrooms have a shower, toilet and wash basin with solar heated hot water. The rooms are protected with mosquito gauze on the windows.

A generator provides electricity for lights and battery charging until 11 pm each night. Hurricane lamps are provided at dusk. Drinking water is available. Early morning tea and coffee are served and you may order tea or coffee anytime at no extra charge. The camp also boasts complimentary laundry service.

You will rarely meet any other vehicles on your game drives around Ruaha's extensive and well maintained road network. Their highly trained English speaking guides will lead you to an abundance of leopard, lion, cheetah and wild dog, not to mention several rare species including Greater and Lesser Kudu, Roan and Sable antelope.
