Sable Mountain Lodge

We have not been to Sable Mountain Lodge yet - but think that it is a good value option for those looking for more stability than a tented camp yet who can't swing Beho Beho or Sand Rivers.

Some pretty interesting things happened in this Beho region during World War I. Selous National Park is the largest National Park in Africa and the wildlife here is good. Perched high on one of the Beho Beho Hills and spread across two peaks with magnificent views to the Uluguru Mountains, Sable Mountain Lodge is a fabulous base from which to explore the Selous National Park.

With just 8 stone cottages, including one honeymoon cottage, and 4 luxury tented bandas individually spaced out over the hillside, the lodge offers intimate and personal service in the midst of a vast wilderness. Each cottage provides spacious and stylish accommodation with full ensuite facilities, 24 hour solar lighting, a spring water supply and wonderful views over the forest from a private verandah. The 4 luxury tented bandas were completed in December 2002. Located on top of one of the hills each provides full ensuite facilities and has outstanding views from a private balcony. Two of the tented bandas are specialized honeymoon bandas, open faced and with their own private plunge pool. This is the ultimate romantic bush experience.

At the heart of Sable Mountain Lodge is a restaurant serving international cuisine, and the well stocked 'Cup and Bucket' bar, the perfect setting to unwind before dinner. A solar fridge ensures that drinks are long and cool. A new open air restaurant and bar have also been added by the swimming pool, affording fantastic views of the game rich hills and the path through the valley used by animals accessing the waterhole.

On the west side of the camp is a tree house overlooking a waterhole. Regular evening guests include elephans, buffalo, and zebra and in the months of November and December the rare sable antelope emerge from the hills seeking water. At night relax in the star gazing snug, the perfect place to observe the pristine night sky and experience the sounds of the bush.

Safaris from the lodge seldom encounter other vehicles since Sable Mountain Lodge is currently the only lodge in this northwest region. Personalized day and night game drives, foot safaris and an incredible boat safari on Lake Tagalala are all available from the lodge.
