Serra Cafema Camp

Amazing! The camp itself is quite simple but quad biking and walking in the surrounding valley is fabulous. Serra Cafema's location is so remote that it offers its visitors rare and genuine interactions with the Himba people. But you really have to be willing to pay for it as the flight costs to get there are no joke.  — Mango's view

Serra Cafema Camp is one of the most remote destinations in all of Africa, offering one of the most memorable experiences. Perched on the banks of the Kunene River, the camp shares this region with the wonderful and colorful Himba people, some of the last true nomadic people of Africa.

Serra Cafema is situated under big, shady albia trees with uninterrupted views of the Kunene River Valley. The camp is elevated on wooden decks with walkways to each tent. There is a small pool and a finely appointed dining area. The camp has 8 canvas and thatched chalets raised on decks, each with its own en-suite bathroom with indoor and outdoor showers, private viewing decks overlooking the Kunene River Valley and the Serra Cafema hills, overhead fan and large mosquito nets. One falls asleep to the gurgling water sounds from the cataract downstream from camp.

The variety of activities to explore the breathtaking landscape dotted all about with springbok, ostrich and oryx, include traversing the sand dunes on carefully guided quad-bike excursions that tread lightly on the dunes and boating on the Kunene River. Walking in the remote mountain and river valleys are also a highlight. Nature drives in Hartman's Valley in open Land Rovers are also offered. Guests may also visit a local working Himba village.

Game viewing in this area is limited to large herds of oryx and springbok in the Hartman's Valley. The Kunene River has a large population of Nile crocodiles. Palm nut vultures are seen occasionally as well as a number of the Namibian endemics. There are also a number of endemic reptiles.
