Set high on a rocky kopje overlooking a landscape dotted with spiky palms and bulbous baobabs, Jabali Ridge is a sophisticated base from which to explore Ruaha National Park. The remarkable beauty of Ruaha is not only in the landscape and its diversity of flora and fauna, or the impressive big game, but in the feeling of having the wilderness all to yourself. With only a handful of visitors at any one time in an area the size of New Jersey, this is an exceptional safari experience.
The eight raised suites at Jabali are expansive and airy with bird-nest thatched roofs and wooden shutters that slide to open up the rooms. Beds are king sized and en suite bathrooms have flushing toilets and rain showers. Out on the deck, guests can get comfy on one of the large cushioned benches and relax with a coffee or cold drink, admiring the golden plains and hundred-year-old baobabs.
Ruaha National Park is renowned in East Africa for its excellent guides and truly wild landscape and Jabali is no different. The greater Ruaha area is thought to be home to one-tenth of the entire world’s wild lion population, with large prides roaming the plains. Cheetah, leopard and packs of wild dog are seen hunting here too. Visitirs can also spot greater and lesser kudu, sable and roan antelope, elephants, giraffes, bat-eared foxes and some of the 570 bird species.

Settlers Drift is located in a remote and untouched part of the Kariega wilderness, offering a unique tented safari combined with 5-star luxury. Gazing down from the deck overlooking the Bushman’s river drift, it feels as if time has stood still since the last feet to have touched this remote valley were those of the 1820 Settlers as they guided their wagons across the river. The lodge consists of 9 spacious tented suites all offer an opulent bedroom and living area, full bathroom, indoor/outdoor shower and private deck.
Kariega Game Reserve is an internationally renowned malaria free “Big 5” private game reserve situated near Port Elizabeth, thus forming a natural extension to Cape Town and the Garden Route. Family owned and managed, it would be accurate to say that the gradual growth and development of the now expansive 10,000 hectare reserve is one of the most accomplished conservation projects in the Eastern Cape to date.
Kariega’s landscape spans across 5 different eco systems, resulting in extremely high game carrying capacities which results in Kariega’s game viewing and birding experience being exceptional. Having 2 major rivers incorporated into the reserve (the Kariega and Bushmans rivers) adds enormous beauty and value. In addition to unforgettable game drives, guests can also enjoy a diversity of other activities, such as guided bush walks, river cruises, canoeing and fishing.
