The Highlands redefines the traditional Ngorongoro experience. Set high on the slopes of the Olmoti volcano, with views all the way to the Serengeti, you can be on the famous Ngorongoro Crater floor at dawn yet far from any other camp. This warm and stylish high-altitude camp, deliberately positioned deep in the highland wilderness for maximum privacy, offers a richness of adventure and range of activities not possible elsewhere in Ngorongoro.
The eight domed suites at The Highlands are made of canvas and glass and are surrounded by lush vegetation with views across the surrounding hills. Each suite has a king-sized bed facing floor-to-ceiling windows and a deck that curves around the tent. En suite bathrooms have hot running water, showers and flushing toilets. At night, wood-burning stoves keep guests cosy and warm. The Highlands uses state-of-the-art technology to minimize their ecological footprint. This includes a full solar plant, a biogas digester that produces the methane we use for cooking, rainwater collection off all tents and a reverse-osmosis plant for producing pure drinking water, thus cutting down on plastic bottles.
With its exclusive location on the Olmoti volcano, The Highlands offers a range of activities from visiting the crater, climbing Olmoti for the best view of the crater to descending into the Empakaai crater for views of the soda lake. You can also spend the afternoon with the local Maasai in one of the neighboring villages to learn about the traditional way of life that has defined this corner of Africa for centuries. School visits may be possible depending on the time of year.
