Like the gossamer fog that wafts around its haunting peaks, or the ghostly shadow of a black wildebeest galloping through its mountain mist, Mount Anderson Ranch contains a thing of beauty, something so other, that it’s almost impossible to define. Those hankering after solitude in pristine nature would be hard-pressed to find a South African retreat more private – and exquisite – than Mount Anderson Ranch. Here no more than six pampered guests enjoy exclusive use of Golden Cottage – the ranch’s single homestead featuring graceful and spacious rooms.

Proclaimed in 1990 as South Africa’s first ever private water catchment reserve, Mount Anderson Ranch is also a classic conservation success story. Once overgrazed cattle country, it has been fully restored to its original ecological splendour. Today it protects not only the major river catchments that are the lifeblood of the Kruger National Park but also conserves unusual antelope such as eland and black wildebeest and charismatic predators like leopard, brown hyena and aardwolf too. It’s also an important sanctuary for threatened mammals like the oribi and pangolin and for critically endangered species like the tiny, rough-haired golden mole. Explore the ranch’s rare wildlife on horseback or brave a 4x4 safari through rolling, sap-green grasslands with a personal ranger. Cast a line in any of our immaculate weirs and rivers and try your hand at fishing for trout.
